Many people who are furnishing or currently renovating their bathroom opt for a modern (and very convenient) solution in the form of a linear drain. However, in some cases, installing such a drain may make water drainage difficult - and consequently, maintaining cleanliness in the shower can be troublesome. When choosing this product, the installation aspect is also important, as it can be mounted both in the floor and on the wall. So which linear drain to choose?
What is a linear drain?
A linear drain is one of the solutions that is perfect for a modern bathroom. It's worth remembering that when designing or renovating a bathroom, we need to consider the linear drain during the design phase - in this case, we do not invest in the traditional solution of a shower tray and cubicle - this type of drain is installed directly in the floor or wall. Moreover, at this stage, it will be easier for us to determine the height of the floor, under which the entire drain and siphon must fit without any problems - the amount of space we allocate to the installation is crucial in this case. A large number of available shower siphons are vertical siphons - more recently, horizontal siphons have also become available: they are maximally shortened, allowing them to be installed low.
The linear drain is an aesthetic and stylish solution, which is most effective in modern bathrooms - we do not install the traditional shower tray here, and the shower cubicle is installed directly in the floor. The linear drain gives us more possibilities when it comes to bathroom arrangement and makes it look designer. However, it is worth remembering that this type of drain sometimes gets clogged, and we need to have the right access to clean or repair it. If we cannot quickly repair the drain, it may require its complete dismantling, which involves significant additional costs.
Types of linear drains
There are various types of linear drains available on the market, and for those not very familiar, choosing the right installation can be quite a challenge. What parameters differentiate linear drains?
- installation method: the linear drain can be mounted on the floor or wall, with the former solution being most commonly used. However, sometimes the floor height does not allow for this - the siphon and the entire drain frame must fit under it. An alternative is a wall-mounted drain. Recently, horizontal siphon models have also been available on the market, which are suitable for low floors.
- capacity: an extremely important parameter. It indicates how much water a specific model can drain in a given time. Capacity is usually measured in liters per minute and should be compared with the efficiency of the entire shower set.
- shape of the drain: contrary to appearances, not all linear drains have a simple shape. Corner or curved models are also available, providing more installation options and, consequently, bathroom arrangement possibilities.
Of course, besides these technical parameters, we mustn't forget about the visual aspect - after all, the linear drain we choose will serve us for many years and should harmonize well with the entire bathroom arrangement.
Finish of linear drains
The main element of the linear drain that we see at first glance is the cover, also known as the grate. It greatly influences the purchase of a particular model - especially since it has a significant impact on the finished look of the bathroom. For this reason, attention should be paid to its appearance and the right product should be chosen. The cheapest solution is a cast iron grate, which not only covers the entire drain but also collects all possible deposits and impurities. Meanwhile, stainless steel grates with cut-outs of various shapes are most commonly used in this case - you can find really interesting and designer solutions that change the character of the room. Those who value high aesthetics can choose linear drains that can be covered with bathroom tiles, making them almost invisible. Another option - good for fans of unconventional solutions - is LED illumination, which will give the bathroom a truly modern character.
When choosing a solution such as a linear drain, one must not forget to select appropriate bathroom tiles - they serve not only a practical purpose but also a decorative one. In this case, it is good to opt for tiles with a III or IV abrasion class - they are not porous, making them easy to keep clean, and moreover, they have anti-slip properties.
